Burgundy is renowned for its wines and visitors to La Marechaude are spoiled for choice with the Beaujolais, Mâconnais vineyards nearby. The world famous vineyards of the Côte d’Or region of Burgundy producing such world famous wines as Chablis and Nuits Saint Georges are also not more than an hour away.
Discovering these wine-growing regions is an experience for both connoisseurs and beginners. Numerous wine routes lead you through the vineyards along famous wine chateaux and cellars where you can taste and buy the local wines.
Even if you know nothing about wine, visiting a wine cellar will be a memorable experience.
The various wine growing regions, chateaux and cellars are worth a visit at any time of year but autumn is arguably the loveliest time to do a wine tasting and experience the whole process of winemaking from close-up. The vines turn from green to yellow, gold and red, forming a stunningly colourful palette. One festivity to look forward to in April is the “Portes Ouvertes” weekend at the Mâconnais villages of Vire and Clessé. For 6 Euros visitors can buy an engraved wine glass enabling them entry to any of the more than 20 participating wineries, and a free tasting of the wonderful white wines of the region. An old-fashioned train shuttles visitors from one area to the other, an experience in itself!
In our gite, you will find a book with ideas for an unforgettable journey to some of the most exceptional vineyards and the many wine-tasting possibilities.
